The hot rays of the morning sun beating down got the teenager up. Yet even the loud yawn that Aang let out failed to awaken the sleeping bison. Appa was being lazy as ever, a habit he had apparently fallen into in the most recent of times, but at least the fluffy bison seemed happy for it, things were easy when he didn't have to fly at top speeds all over the world, always on the move and most of the time with the fear of being chased. All of that was now in the past, so now Appa just tended to laze about. The airbender didn't blame him.
The construction of the city was going faster than Aang had expected. All around, large buildings were being built up out of earth, brick, and even metal. He was actually surprised at how well everything was going, it was really beginning to look like a place where people could live and thrive.

"Wake up!!"
Toph cried out loud. She had just arrived in Republic City not too long ago all the way from the Earth Kingdom city of Ba Sing Se. After all of this journey she was ready to get to work, and when she finally arrived, it seemed as though Aang was doing nothing other than sleeping. Toph rolled her eyes. And to think she had been in a rush to get here and hadn't slept for days.
"If you're not working on building this city, then we need to start your metalbending training! Are you ready, Twinkle Toes?!"
She stood before Appa with her arms crossed. She was fighting the urge to earthbend mud into aang's face to forcefully wake him up, but ultimately decided against it... this time.

“Hwuah?!” the airbender flailed into a fully wakened state, springing to his feet. At the sound of her booming voice, his eyes opened wide. But the shock quickly subsided, leaving Aang mostly just happy to see his friend. As far as he had known, Toph was supposed to be in Ba Sing Se right now, seeing her was an unexpected surprise.
“Hey, Toph. It’s good to see you aga--- ” she broke in before he could finish. Metalbending? Aang had never thought twice about learning the particular aspect of earthbending that Toph had developed. “Uhh, you know, Toph, I think maybe I should pass on metalbending… I mean, I had enough trouble with earthbending,” he rubbed the back of his head with a sense of nervousness that he displayed mainly when he wasn’t sure what else to say to a person. The earthbender wasn’t exactly known for taking no for an answer.
“Plus, I’m working my arrow off for this city…! Is that why you’re here now, to help out?” he beamed a hopeful grin.

Toph's eyebrow twitched when she listened to Aang's response to her question. he couldn't be serious could he? They needed to start metalbending training, and he needed to do it now. Aang was so lazy, Toph could hardly accept it. Maybe that was how airbenders were, but Aang was an earthbender too! Toph stomped her foot on the ground, and one moment later, a column of earth shot up beneath her, propelling her upward and into the air, directly toward Aang. She then landed on Appa a moment later and knelt down by Aang and grabbed his ear.
"I'm sure you have been working your arrow off for the city, and yes I did come to help with that," Toph said before squeezing his ear and pulling on it a bit harder. Perhaps she was trying to rip it off.
"But you look too well rested, which means you're slacking," she squinted at him. "Just because the war is over doesn't mean you're not the Avatar. And it is true that for what every Avatar learns, it's passed down to the next in the cycle, right?"

“Ow, ow, Toph!” his ear was burning with pain but still he did not try to fight it. Fighting it would only make it hurt worse and cause the earthbender to hold on all the tighter.
Honestly, Aang didn’t believe for a second that he had been slacking in his duties! If anything well, he was… maybe… only a little. But it wasn’t as if they could get everything done in one night. These things took time. Time and patience. “I know I know and no, I don’t think so,” he hadn’t thought about that but no, it wasn’t true, was it? He wasn't sure how much experience previous avatars had with new forms of bending being invented.
“I mean I guess it could possibly be easier for the next to learn it if I did but… Toph, metalbending?” the boy groaned in complaint. His teacher was the only person on the planet who could bend metal for a reason. It wasn’t an easy thing to do…! As an airbender by birth, Aang could not see himself being successful in this sort of training.

"Hmph!"
Toph finally released Aang's ear after another moment or two. After which, she immediately followed up by hitting his chest with the back of her fist in a slick, sturdy motion. it wouldn't hurt him much, but it would get her point of slight irritation across. She wasn't mad or anything, but she was somewhat frustrated. Just irritated. She couldn't come straight out and say it, but she had a yearning passion to pass on the knowledge she had learned.
"Sure, you might get to live 100 more years and 100,000 more lives, but I'm not always going to be around to teach you. Who knows how long it'll be before an Avatar gets another chance to learn?"
Toph questioned. Sure, she wanted to teach it, but at the same time, it was a very powerful form of bending. Teaching it to just anyone could easily allow it to fall into the wrong hands. Someone could use it the wrong way. That, and Toph didn't like working with snotty-nosed kids... and perhaps, a small portion of it was something more.
"But fine. If you don't need my help..."

She had let go of his ear, which felt much better and all, but Toph had apparently decided only to allow him a brief respite before doing something else. He reeled back, grunting quietly from the punch before falling into sitting cross-legged on the ground. The more his friend went on about it, the guiltier he felt. –Wait a second. How did she do that?! His reasoning was sound, after all! How could she make him feel bad about not wanting to try something that he quite frankly knew he wouldn’t be able to do! Ugh.
“Okay, fiiine,” gosh, and to think Aang had thought he was all done with the hardest part – learning new forms of bending. And now Toph was springing this on him. It was just like her to do something like that, but still… “What kind of Avatar would I be if I didn’t even bother to give it a try, right?” he joked. This was going to be worse than his first day of earthbending training, he just knew it.
He airbended a cushion of air beneath himself and was lifted onto the flats of his feet. “So where do we begin, Sifu Toph? A solid horse stance? Deep breathing? Concentration?” Despite all his earlier and current protests, the teenager still could not help but feel a little excited about learning how to metalbend even though the chance of him succeeding was remote. The other plus side was the fact that with the war over, he wouldn’t need to rush through the training. There would be no deadline, no end of the world scenario, nothing that outright said ‘you have less than a year to master it, or else!’.
